Birthdays

Dear Biscuit & Sparkly Watermelon,
What a crazy 5 days!?! We've had Sparkly's birthday and 2 birthday parties in the last 5 days. Your sister has been loving the parties- one with a bounce house and one at a Durham Bulls game!

Happy Birthday!

All my love,
Mama

Just the four of us

Dear Biscuit & Sparkly Watermelon,
Sparkly, welcome to the world!!! You arrived Tuesday morning, August 20, 2013 at 5:21am.  You weighed 9 pounds, 3 ounces, head circumference was 14 inches, and you were 21.5 inches long. Dr. Laura Carlson, a second year UNC resident, delivered you at WakeMed Hospital. You went through a lot with me that morning, but you did everything you needed to do to make it to the world safe and healthy and perfect.

Although our ride to the hospital was scary, once they got us stabilized, my labor started and you were born in under 3 hours. With every contraction, I visualized either your face or your sister's blossoming out of a yellow flower. Your sister also drew this picture for me to focus on during labor. I had these photos and the picture packed in my Birth Center bag, and although I didn't have them with me, I felt as though I did. They kept me so calm and focused. It was truly miraculous.

Labor and delivery was fantastic, amazing, just like I pictured it in every way. And for that, I am humbled and grateful.

Immediately after you were born, they put you on my belly, and Papa cut the umbilical cord. I got to see our placenta- it looked like a big purple and red flat jelly bean to me. I felt incredible holding you there for a few minutes. It was one of the best moments of my life.

Unfortunately, because of some other events, I missed the rest of your first day and many of the "firsts" you enjoyed. Rest assured, Papa, Magia and Pakka have plenty of pictures of you getting a bath, having a meal, and changing your diaper. Most importantly, you got to meet your irreplaceable big sister, Biscuit.

I already miss having you in your safe little uterine shell, but you are now my whole world. I'm unable to tell you how you can love this much. After Papa and Biscuit, I didn't think there was enough room left, but your heart just grows. You are always in my heart. Thank you for taking this journey with me, and thank God we arrived safely on the other side.

All my love,
Mama
